Birch, Stain and Lacquer: How Embergarth Wooden Books Are Made

The materials behind an Embergarth wooden book are straightforward: birch planks, wood glue, wood stain, clear lacquer and gold zinc-plated steel hinges. Tom brings them together by hand in South Wales to make a book-shaped box for your home.

Knowing what goes into a piece helps you understand its appearance and how to care for it. Here is a closer look at the wood, finish and fittings.

Birch planks and wood glue

Each book is assembled from birch planks joined with wood glue. The wood provides the structure of the box and its cover, while its grain remains part of the finished appearance.

Grain patterns vary naturally between pieces of timber. Your book will therefore have its own pattern, even when you choose the same size as another Embergarth book.

Wood stain and clear lacquer

Wood stain adds colour to the birch while allowing the grain to show through. Clear lacquer forms the finish over the stained wood, helping protect the surface during everyday use.

The colour you see comes from the stain and the individual wood beneath it. Differences in grain can affect how the finished surface looks, giving each book its own character.

Gold zinc-plated steel hinges

The hinges are steel with a gold zinc-plated finish. They connect the cover to the body and allow it to open, with a warm metallic colour alongside the stained birch.

An empty interior to make your own

Each wooden book is supplied empty and unfitted. Trays, dividers and display contents are not included. Before choosing one for a particular belonging, compare the usable interior with the dimensions of the object.

Our guide to choosing a wooden book box explains the sizes and the difference between external and internal measurements. If you need help checking a fit, contact us before ordering.

How to care for your wooden book

  • Keep it indoors, away from prolonged moisture, strong direct sunlight and sources of heat.
  • Dust the surface with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Wipe up spills promptly and avoid soaking the wood.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the finish.
